October 22-30, 2009
In this part of the project we focused on the analysis of Norwegian folk instruments and the musical traditions of the country. A group of students from Warsaw spent three days in Ole Bull Academy where it participated in several music classes. The students learned about music, dance and the history of Ole Bull Academy where they compared Norwegian musical traditions with Polish culture. Moreover, the students became familiar with the technique of paying hardanger fiddle. For the next four days, the group of Polish students spent time in Oslo with their Norwegian colleagues, where they prepared to play concerts in Barratt Due Institute, the Polish Embassy, and at the festival in Drobak. All of these concerts were planned to celebrate the 200th anniversary of Ole Bull.
April 18- 25, 2010
The Yehudi Menuhin International Competition which took place in spring 2010 was a great chance for all of the students to meet world-famous professional musicians. At that time, the students took part not only in the competition, but they also attended master classes conducted by members of the competition jury. For most of the competitors, this was a valuable experience to get to know different interpretations of music and to prove their own musical abilities and instrumental technique.
June 21-28, 2010
The year of Chopin was celebrated by the members of the project in the workshops taking place in Warsaw, Żelazowa, Wola, Brochów, and Mrościbrody in June 2010. For about one week, one could listen to classical and jazz interpretations of Chopin’s works, as well as learning about folk dances from Mazowsze and its neighborhoods. There was also a seminar about historical contextualization of the century in which Chopin composed his music, and after the one-week workshop we enjoyed the “Chopin versus Grieg” concert.
July 16-28, 2010 and the second half of July 2011
The International Music Festival in Lancut will take place in the second halves of both July 2010 and 2011. All of the students who will arrive to Lancut will take part in several cultural events. They will have individual classes and practice chamber music with a coach. They will also perform in concerts, both at the Ballroom Hall in the castle in Lancut and outdoors, surrounded by gorgeous scenery. Additionally, the participants will also have a chance to attend composition, improvisation, and electronic music classes, where afterwards they will create a soundtrack to a movie.
October 24-31, 2010
The opening ceremony of the second year of the project will take place in August, 2010 in Radziejowice. For one week, the Norwegian Symphonic Orchestra will be preparing works of lesser known Polish and Norwegian composers for its concerts in Warsaw and Plock, and in the following week, the orchestra will perform the pieces with soloists which were selected during the competition. The festival will favor us with the presence of “Kapela”, the folk group from “Wsi Warszawa”, and in addition to their performance, the group will be explaining its artistic vision of music nowadays. Following the show, there will be a short Alexander technique workshop that will end the entire event.
January, 2011
As it was in winter 2010, the next meeting of the International Symphonic Orchestra will start by the end of December, 2011. In the beginning of its visit, the orchestra will perform in Warsaw, and then it will perform the New Year’s Concert in Zakopane. There will also be a three day workshop focusing its teachings on the works of Karol Szymanowski and on the technique of playing folk instruments (złóbcoki) which are often used in music of a small Polish area called, Podhale. Furthermore, the chamber groups will have an opportunity to have coachings with the members of Royal String Quartet. Both the workshop and the final concert will take place in a beautiful villa called “Atma.”
April, 2011
During a three day workshop in Troldhaugen and Lysřen, a few musicologists from Norway will introduce the works of Edward Grieg as well as explain the historical context of the era and the influence of the culture on his music. Shortly after the workshop in Troldhaugen, the Polish students will visit their Norwegian colleagues in Oslo, where they will all be preparing for the “Chopin versus Grieg” concerts in Oslo and in a picturesque city, Drobak. At the end of the trip, there will be a lecture given about the history of both Norwegian cities.
June, 2011
The concert at the ceremonial opening of the Valdres Summer Symphony festival will be the climax of the project in which all of the students will actively take part. The soloists, as well the members of the chamber groups and the orchestra, will all perform together. Thanks to the prestige of the festival, the final concert of the Polish-Norwegian Youth Music Academy will be transmitted on international television.
